- Overnight rains leads to flooding
- KQ diverts flights
- Terminal C Roof leaks
Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport received heavy rainfall leading to flooding across the airport area. In a statement the Kenya Airports Authority revealed the magnitude of the downpour that has affected the airport’s operations.
“Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) wishes to notify the public that the heavy rainfall experienced in Nairobi this evening has led to flooding at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport’s Tower Avenue Underpass. In response to this situation, KAA Security Teams and the Police have cordoned off the affected area to ensure the safety of all airport users and personnel” read the statement.
Kenya’s national carrier Kenya Airways started diverting flights in response to the downpour that resulted in flooding and poor visibility. KQ released an initial statement apologising to affected passengers, “Due to the heavy rains and poor visibility in Nairobi we have diverted a number of our flights and as a result may have extended delays for some of our departures out of Nairobi, the safety and wellbeing of our crew and Customers is our number one priority”.
A follow up statement has been released by the airline, confirming the safe landing of diverted flights but still experiencing severe disruptions. “Further to our communication on flight disruptions due to severe weather in Nairobi, we wish to update our customers that all our diverted flights landed safely in Nairobi. Our scheduled flights out of Nairobi also departed, though with delays. We are still recovering from the disruption, and customers are advised to expect some delays in their departure and arrival times. We expect to resume our normal operations by the end of the day today”.
Visuals circulating on social media have revealed the extent of the downpour. Earlier in the week Jomo kenyatta International was in the news when the roof in Terminal C had a leaking roof.
